The reason for this was because upholstered furniture was hot and the fabric would get dirty easily from the sweat and oils of all the guests that sat on the couch. Back then slipcovers was mostly those ghastly plastic or vinyl slipcovers that either stuck to your legs when you got up or made a noise when you sat down. Practically everyones grandmother or mother had the dreaded plastic slipcovers, but that was the style back then. They were cheap to make and mass-produced all over the United States. Then again, so was the furniture. When furniture was able to be mass-produced, the use of slipcovers declined. No one cared about his or her furniture anymore because it could easily be replaced. However, today slipcovers are still in use. Today, slipcovers are just as stylish, but dont involve any sticking or noise when you leave or return to your chair. Slipcovers today are used to give the room a make over or give the furniture a make over. When your couch is so old that the pattern is fading out, thats when its time for a slipcover.
