Ottomans

Author: Peter Emerson

Ottomans are decorative furniture pieces that are used for seating, lying down, storage and giving a gorgeous look to your living room. Ottomans are common in countries like the United States and European countries, but they are seldom found in the third world countries.

Quite interestingly, the term is derived from the French word ottomane, which is the feminine version of ottoman. The word could have also been derived from the Italian Ottomano, Medieval Latin Ottomanus, Medieval Greek Othomanoia, from Arabic Utmani. Ottoman was also the name of an empire of the late 16th century.

To give a more comprehensive definition of ottoman, it can be said that an ottoman is a heavy ribbed fabric of a mixture of silk and wool or cotton. They are also known as the ottoman silk. According to many scholars, an ottoman was the first cushioned seat without back or arms, or a storage-box with a padded top.

There are many types of ottomans that might suit ones home and purpose, and give the room the charm one is looking for. They are available in all sizes starting from standard size to small and even to oversize. Many beautiful ottomans are covered with leather. They are mostly used as storage benches, and footrests are constructed with a sturdy hardwood frame. They are mostly wrapped with luxurious leather or beautiful designer fabrics.

Ottomans are used as footstools, extra seating, a coffee table, or as bedroom furniture. Some of the popular ottomans are leather cube ottomans, storage cocktail ottomans, upholstered ottomans and round ottomans.
