Do you remember the time when your kids started asking you question after question? Did you shut them up or did they manage to get the answer? We are usually very busy and will sometimes tell them that is the way it is. It is actually a great opportunity for us to talk to the kids and teach them something new. For example, if a kid asks "Why are leaves green?" There can be so many ways of answering this question. I would explain about chlorophyll and photosynthesis to them irregardless of whether they understand or not. This is because if they do not understand, they will ask another question. In this way, we can continue our conversation and I can continue explaining more things to them. They can learn more in a fun and safe way. Of course if you have more in depth knowledge about any topic, do share with them too. You could even ask them the same question and ask them why they think plants have green leaves. This will trigger their thinking process. You will be surprised at the amazing answers they can give you. Show them that you are surprised and pleased with their answers even if it sounds ridiculous. It will trigger even more response from them. It can be very fun as kids can think of all sorts of reasons and link them in funny ways. Remember to tell them when they ask for it. It will be so much harder when you ask them to sit down and say today I am going to teach you about plants. Questions from the kids show that they are thinking and interested in what is going on around them. Adults do not ask as much questions partly because we are afraid others may think we are stupid. Others may have lost the curosity as kids. Look at the kids to remind ourselves how fun and enjoyable life can be. Try not to avoid answering the kids' questions. You will never know where the conversation will lead you and after a while you will be engaged too. |
