Sony Walkman Walks Out of Japan!

Author: Dan D

After 25 years, Sony will close the last Walkman factory in Japan. According to Sony spokesman, Atsuo Omagari, the factory has been around since 1979, and was one of the first factories since the Sony Walkman debuted.

As production of the Walkman is moved to China, Malaysia, and other Asian Countries, 200 Japanese jobs will be lost, causing a small but meaningfull blow to the Japanese economy.

This not being the only factory closed, other factories around Japan have also suffered the same fate. But why'?

It's all about Sony's restructuring plan, that was announced last September, to rebost it's ailing electronics operations worldwide. The plan will run 3 years, and will reduce the number of global manufactoring facilities worldwide.

With competition from Apple's iPod, and Mp3 devices coming out from China and Korea, Sony might as well give it's last bow in this market.
