Owning Your Own Web Page Couldn't Be Any Easier

Author: John Gibb

While free web hosting that lets you do anything is hard to find, free services that do one thing well are becoming more and more common. Instead of shelling out for a web host, it can be very effective to just use the same username at a few different sites, and link between them in your profiles.

Two very good free blogging sites are Blogspot and LiveJournal, which both let you start a blog for free and post to it as much as you like. Blogspot is the more serious of the two, while LiveJournal is more fun, and has lots of functions that allow you to form groups and link to your friends blogs.

If you want to put photos up on the web, Flickr is fast becoming the standard place where photographers hang out online. It has a clean, simple design, and allows you to upload as many photos as you want and tag them with categories so that other people can find them. If you upload a picture of your cat, for example, and then tag it cat, your cat will be added to the cat section alongside everyone elses cat pictures and people might even come and leave comments about your photo!

Photos are just so last century, though if you have a digital video camera, then putting your videos online can be even better. Advances in Internet connection speeds have made it easier to send videos around on the web, and video hosting websites like YouTube and Google Video are allowing even non-technical users to keep video diaries, or just post videos of whatever they like. If you post videos often, people will start to subscribe to your video feed, which means that every time you make a new video it automatically gets sent out to a whole load of people. It looks like everyones going to get their fifteen minutes of fame on the Internet sooner or later.
