Smooth CE 7.4 Elliptical Trainer Review

Author: Rich Rojas

For quite a while now, Smooth Fitness has sold only one model of elliptical trainer: the Smooth CE. The Smooth CE has earned a well-deserved reputation as a great home elliptical trainer at an affordable price. Made in Germany by Kettler, the Smooth CE combines a 48 lb flywheel with solid construction for an extremely smooth elliptical motion in an elegantly styled package.

The Smooth CE once upon a time had two lower-priced siblings in the ME and PE, but both were discontinued a while back leaving the CE to boldly forge ahead alone, outselling its competitors and almost single-handedly growing the reputation of Smooth Fitness. Many people arent aware that Smooth Fitness also offers Treadmills and home gyms.

Well, its time to rejoice, for the Smooth CE just got some new models to keep it company! A recent price increase to the Smooth CE coincided with the introduction of three new models of Smooth CE elliptical trainers: the CE 2.1, CE 3.2, and the CE 7.4. These American cousins of the CE have a radically different design and several improvements that make them worthy additions to the Smooth line of elliptical trainers.

Made in the USA, the new CE ellipticals use a thick tubular frame design that has more of a club-like look and provides a high degree of stability. Stability is essential in the design of an elliptical trainer. Many of the lower-priced elliptical trainers will wobble side to side and let out annoying squeaks when aggressively used.

All three of the new models have ergonomically designed foot pedals, which pivot to follow the natural motion of your ankles. These types of pedals have also been shown to help reduce the dreaded foot numbness, which is all too common when using most elliptical trainers on the market today. The CE 3.2 and CE 7.4 have commercial-type, LED dot matrix displays on their consoles, which provide enhanced visibility during your workouts.

The Smooth CE 7.4 is the Big Daddy in the Smooth CE line. It weighs in at 210 lbs and takes up a bit of space. However, it approaches commercial grade quality at a residential price. The general rule of thumb with elliptical trainers is that the larger and heavier they are, the more stable, smooth, and durable they are. This is something to consider when shopping for an elliptical trainer.

Smooth Fitness has increased your choices. In the past, you could have bought their only option, the Smooth CE, and done very well for yourself. That still holds true today. However, with the addition of the new models they have put the Smooth quality within range of consumers with smaller budgets with the CE 2.1 and CE 3.2 and have also provided a terrific high-end elliptical trainer with the CE 7.4 for folks looking to build an impressive home gym.
