Sammy "The Dull" Alito

Author: Robert Crane

Okay, so Samuel Alito looks like the kind of guy Dubya towel whipped in the showers after gym class. I feel for him, I was that kind of guy too. Okay, so Samuel Alito looks a little spacey, a little like an absent minded professor, a little like Dubya answering a question with multi-syllable words in itthe guy probably has a lot on his mind. Ive been there too. Okay, so Samuel Alito is pro-life, pro anti-gay, pro brain-dead life support; in short, pro anti-liberal thought. What a shocker! Okay, so he doesnt even seem to have that slick sense of humor wild and crazy Orrin Hatch claims he has.

The truth is what we have here is Sammy The Dull Alito. What we also have here is a person qualified to become a Supreme Court justice. Look, I know I am out on a very lonely limb and if I listen hard, I can even hear it being sawed by my fellow Progressives (code for Liberals), but I have to be honest and say, Okay, so what? Good luck Justice Alito.

Sammy the Dull is a spoil of warpolitical warpure and simple. When you run failed campaigns and lose control of the White House and Congress, this is what transpires. Sammy the Dull will be voted in by the Senate along party lines. And we act all surprised, all flabbergasted. If the shoe were on the other foot, the Democrats would behave no differently, nor would the Republicans.

Am I concerned about Roe v. Wade being overturned? Not really. Sure there may be some ratcheting back of unfettered abortions but Im not sure that is a bad thing. Will there be an amendment added to the Constitution defining marriage as Rick Insanetorum and Dubya define it? Not likely, if the Democrats get their god damn act together and start taking some seats back. And if they cant do that this year with all the nonsense going on with the wiretapping and the Abramoff payouts and the Iraq fiasco and the borders and Katrina and the exporting of jobs already, then Democrats really are donkeys and deserve what they dont get.

And nothing for nothing but can Massachusetts retire Kennedy or something; hang his big jacket up in the rafters of the Kennedy Library. West Virginia please do the same for Senator ByrdI have to pop tranquilizers every time I watch him hold a piece of paper in his hand. These guys are killing Libs everywhere. Also, I love him but Howard Dean has got to tone his ass down. He says crazy stuff. He is a scream away from being a real conspiracy theory nut job. Oh yeah, Joe Biden, who I happen to think the world of, needs some coaching licketty split. It takes the guy nineteen minutes to ask a simple question. Whats he going to do when he is in a vice presidential debate?

Look I could go on about the Republicans for ever. I mean Senator Sessions is a whining sniveling whack job. And Senator Coburn, we get it! You really, really, really hate abortion! Shut up already!

But I cant worry about Republicans. They seem to me to be well on the way to self destruction without any help from me.

So where was I before all the foilishtik?

Oh yeah, the fact is that Samuel Alito seems like a good egg. He is thoughtful. He is smart. He understands the importance of his role. And hes dull. Hammering away at the Princeton club he joined or his stock portfolio seems petty. He answered the inquiries with the right amount of forgetfulness. As far as nailing him down on Roe v. Wade and other pressing issues, he answered with enough vagueness to make the religious right a tad nervous.

Actually, and dont let this get around, but he strikes me as a judge who has the potential over time to drift towards the center. So does Chief Justice Roberts for that matter. It happens. Neither strikes me as being extreme. It is all I can hope for anyway. Besides, Im sure that Scalia and Thomas will be snapping towels at Sammy the Dulls pasty white droopy buttocks soon enough in the Supreme Court showers. That will be cause enough for him to move towards the middle.

In the meantime, Democrats need to take their medicine, put this behind them, and get on with the business of winning in 2006.

Then it will be payback time. Ah, payback!
